How to get from Tivat to Moscow
There are currently no direct flights between Tivat and Moscow – Russian airlines have not flown to Montenegro since 2022. You therefore travel with one connection, and two routes stand out as the most practical:
- Via Belgrade – Air Serbia links Tivat and Podgorica with Belgrade, from where it flies regularly to Moscow. This is usually the most popular and fastest option.
- Via Istanbul – Turkish Airlines flies from Tivat and Podgorica to Istanbul, with several daily departures from there to Moscow’s airports.
Tip: book the whole journey on a single ticket. Your bag is then normally checked through to Moscow, and if the first flight is delayed the airline must rebook you on the next one – protection you don’t get when you combine two separate tickets yourself.
Journey time
Tivat to Belgrade takes about an hour and Belgrade to Moscow about three hours. Including the layover, the whole trip usually takes between 5 and 9 hours. The route via Istanbul tends to be a little longer.
Best time to book
- Summer and early autumn (June–September) – the most pleasant weather for sightseeing; book 6 to 8 weeks ahead.
- New Year and Orthodox Christmas – a period of high demand, so book as early as possible.
- Late autumn and early spring – usually the lowest fares.
- Alternative departure – also check flights from Podgorica, as connections from there are sometimes cheaper.
Moscow’s airports
The city is served by three major international airports, and which one you land at depends on the airline. Your arrival airport is clearly shown in the search results – keep this in mind if someone is meeting you or you’ve booked a transfer.
- Sheremetyevo (SVO) – the largest, north-west of the city; the Aeroexpress train to Belorussky station takes about 35–40 minutes.
- Vnukovo (VKO) – south-west of the centre; the Aeroexpress reaches Kievsky station in about the same time.
- Domodedovo (DME) – south-east of the city; the train to Paveletsky station takes around 45 minutes.
What to see in Moscow
- Red Square – the city’s central square, with Lenin’s Mausoleum and the elegant GUM department store.
- The Kremlin – a fortress of cathedrals and the Armoury, enclosed by walls more than five centuries old.
- St Basil’s Cathedral – playful, colourful domes that have become Moscow’s trademark.
- Bolshoi Theatre – a world-renowned stage for opera and ballet.
- Tretyakov Gallery – the richest collection of Russian painting.
- The metro – underground stations with mosaics, chandeliers and marble, like small palaces.
- Zaryadye and Arbat – a modern park overlooking the Moskva River and the pedestrian street of old Moscow.
How long to stay
Allow at least three to four days to get to know the city: one for Red Square, the Kremlin and St Basil’s, one for museums and galleries, and one for the Arbat, a metro ride and the riverside parks. Moscow is huge, so it’s smartest to stay near a metro station inside the Garden Ring – you’ll save a lot of time getting around.
