Havana – a city where time ran differently

Pastel facades, 1950s convertibles, music drifting out of every other courtyard and the ocean crashing against the Malecón sea wall – Havana is experienced with all the senses. The old town, Habana Vieja, with its squares and colonial palaces, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and just a few streets away the lively everyday life of Havana begins.

Places not to miss

  • The four squares of Old Havana – Plaza de Armas, Plaza Vieja, Plaza de San Francisco and Cathedral Square.
  • The Malecón – an eight-kilometre oceanfront promenade, at its best in the early evening.
  • The Capitolio and Gran Teatro – the monumental heart of the city centre.
  • Revolution Square – the site of mass rallies and famous murals.
  • El Morro Fortress – guarding the bay entrance, with views over the whole city.

Don’t skip a classic car ride along the coast, and if you have time, set aside a day or two for the Viñales Valley, known for its tobacco farms, or for the white beaches of Varadero.

Where to stay

If atmosphere is what you’re after, choose Old Havana – everything from museums to live-music bars is within a few steps. Vedado is calmer and more modern, with wide avenues close to the Malecón. Besides hotels, casas particulares are very popular: private rooms and apartments with hosts who often cook breakfast and help arrange trips. Plan at least three days for the city itself, or a full week with beach time and excursions.

How to get to Havana from Montenegro

There are no direct flights between Tivat and Havana. You travel with one or two connections, usually via European cities with regular flights to Cuba:

  • Madrid – Europe’s main gateway to Cuba, with flights by Spanish airlines; in summer you can also reach Madrid from Tivat on a seasonal route.
  • Paris – Air France flies to Havana, and Paris can be reached from Montenegro directly (seasonally) or via another city.
  • Other hubs – Istanbul, Frankfurt, Vienna or Rome, continuing via Madrid or Paris.

The transatlantic flight from Madrid or Paris takes around ten hours, so the whole journey from Tivat usually takes 15 to 22 hours. Cuba is six hours behind Montenegro. Outside the summer season, when Tivat has fewer routes, also compare departures from Podgorica in the search.

Airports in Cuba

Most flights land at José Martí (HAV), some fifteen kilometres southwest of the centre. Public transport to the airport is basic, so the best option is an official taxi from outside the terminal or a transfer arranged in advance with your accommodation – Old Havana is about half an hour away. For a beach holiday, Varadero (VRA) airport is also handy; some flights from Europe land there, about a two-hour drive from Havana.

When to travel and book

The most pleasant time is the dry season, from November to April, when it is warm and rain is rare. For December, January and Easter, book two to four months ahead. June to November is hurricane season – fares are often lower, but the weather is less predictable. On long journeys it pays to compare several itineraries, as an option with a longer layover can be considerably cheaper.

Practical tips

  • Documents: you need a valid passport and the documents required by the Cuban authorities, such as a tourist card and travel health insurance; check the official requirements for your nationality and the transit rules of your connecting country.
  • Money: cards are not accepted everywhere – bring enough cash.
  • Internet: mobile data is limited, so save maps and bookings offline.
