THE CITY OF MUSIC

PODGORICA – LEIPZIG FLIGHTS

If you love classical music, Leipzig, the city of Bach, Wagner, Mendelssohn and Schumann, should definitely be on your list… A Podgorica – Leipzig flight is the fastest way to get there.

TRAVELING TO LEIPZIG

Leipzig takes its name from the linden trees. It lies in the state of Saxony, in eastern Germany. The first demonstrations for German reunification began in this city in 1989. But that’s not what Leipzig is famous for…

Still, you should see the Town Hall, St. Nicholas Church, the oldest church in this part of the country dating from the 12th century, Germany’s oldest music university, the oldest botanical garden and the largest railway station…

If you want to pay tribute to the great Johann Sebastian Bach, head to St. Thomas Church, where Bach worked as cantor and where he is buried. He directed the church choir here from 1723 until his death in 1750. Right next to the church stands a monument to Felix Mendelssohn, unveiled in 2008 to mark the 200th anniversary of the famous composer’s birth.

Be sure to visit the Völkerschlachtdenkmal, Leipzig’s landmark and the largest monument in Europe. It was built to commemorate the Battle of Leipzig, where Napoleon was defeated. After the battle he abdicated and was then exiled to Elba. It was the largest battle in recorded history and remained so until World War I. The monument is 90 meters tall, and 500 steps lead to the top, where a fantastic view awaits.

If you love animals, visit the zoo, one of the largest in Germany. Its main attraction is the elephant enclosure, with a new pool so deep that the elephants can dive.

MUSIC IN LEIPZIG

Ever since 1254, when the St. Thomas Choir, one of the oldest boys’ choirs in the world, was first mentioned in written records, music has flowed through every corner of the city. Leipzig also boasts a fantastic, imposing organ in its concert hall, made up of 6,638 pipes. The Leipzig Opera has a very rich repertoire, so we definitely recommend getting tickets and enjoying a performance… Leipzig is also proud of its citizens: Johann Sebastian Bach, the most famous cantor of St. Thomas Church, as well as Richard Wagner, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, who founded Germany’s first conservatory in his city in 1843, and Robert Schumann and Clara Wieck…

To complete the musical picture of the city, visit the Museum of Musical Instruments too.

DON’T MISS IN LEIPZIG

Be sure to stop for coffee at the café „Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum”, which has been around for more than three centuries. Bach, Schumann, Liszt, Wagner, Goethe, Napoleon and others were regulars. Inside, you can also visit a museum dedicated to coffee.

Speaking of culinary delights, I can’t forget to point you to Auerbachs Keller, a tavern that opened back in 1525. Who knows, you might sit at the very table where Goethe once sat, and if you’ve read his Faust, you’ll recognize this place as the first stop on Mephisto and Faust’s journey…
