Flights from Podgorica to Split: Diocletian’s City on the Adriatic
FLIGHTS PODGORICA – SPLIT
No one may say a word against Split – that was the message of a song by the late Dino Dvornik. And truly, there’s nothing anyone can hold against a city that has it all: the sea, the sun, beautiful buildings, excellent restaurants… Founded in the 3rd century, the city has preserved much of its earliest past and is proud of it today, and it earned its place on the world tourism map back when the Mediterranean’s first “top” destinations were being drawn in. Book your Podgorica – Split ticket in time and you can get a very good price, which is one more reason to travel to this Dalmatian city.

TRAVELING TO SPLIT
The Riva, Split’s seafront promenade, runs the length of the Old Town and is one of the finest in Europe. The best way to see why is from a chair on the balcony of the ST Riva café, where the views of the promenade, the harbor and the islands across the water are truly magnificent. No wonder the Roman emperor Diocletian chose this very spot to build his lavish palace back in 295 AD. Today, despite centuries of additions, the palace remains the symbol of Split’s Old Town: a unique blend of architecture set in a maze of narrow streets.
Your first impressions of Diocletian’s world are in sharp contrast with the gleaming modern promenade. Enter the dark cellars of the former palace through the Bronze Gate, which leads off the Riva. Explore the enormous, labyrinthine halls once used to store wine and olives. When you come out, you’ll find yourself in the sunny, colonnaded Peristyle, once the palace’s central courtyard. All of the Old Town’s main sights are a short walk from this beautiful square. Step through the carved oak doors of the 13th-century Cathedral of Saint Domnius and wonder what Diocletian, the notorious persecutor of Christians, would have made of this holy place, given that it was originally his mausoleum. The bloodthirsty emperor believed he was the reincarnation of Jupiter, and accordingly built a magnificent temple dedicated to the Roman god.
Linger on People’s Square to soak up the city’s atmosphere, then pass through the Golden Gate, once the most important entrance to the city. Along the way you’ll pass an impressive Gothic palace and one of the smallest churches in the world, the six-century-old Church of Saint Martin, built into the guards’ passage above the gate. Just over 1,700 years ago, Diocletian supposedly entered his home for the first time through the Golden Gate. Today it is home to a remarkable statue of the 10th-century Croatian bishop Gregory of Nin.
If you find yourself in Split in summer, you can relax and enjoy the Adriatic at the city’s Bačvice beach, or enrich your trip with an excursion to beautiful Hvar or stunning Mljet, or head to Bol on the island of Brač for a swim at Zlatni Rat, Croatia’s most photographed beach.
