FLIGHTS PODGORICA – NICE

Once known as Terra Amata and later as Nikaia, the city we now call Nice has drawn people since the days of the earliest human communities. Today this sun-soaked city dazzles with its beauty and seduces visitors with its narrow streets and gorgeous squares. There are countless reasons to visit Nice, and the best way to start planning your trip is to book a Podgorica – Nice flight.

TRAVEL TO NICE

Nice was once an important trading port, founded as the city of Nikaia in the 4th century BC… Many peoples swept through Nice… and all of them wanted to stay. In the early 20th century it also caught the eye of the Russian aristocracy, who, fleeing the October Revolution, discovered this jewel on the Mediterranean coast and settled here, bringing great wealth with them. That wealth went a long way toward turning Nice into a glamorous resort city that soon became one of the most popular destinations in the world. Besides its favorable location, Nice enjoys sunshine practically all year round, making it one of the sunniest cities in Europe. Warmed by the sun and caressed by the sea, Nice is a city where you are sure to feel at home. Its popularity means hotel prices are fairly high, but since Nice is not just a summer destination, you can visit at any time of year, and in spring and fall accommodation is noticeably more affordable.

To soak up the colors of Nice, be sure to stroll through the Old Town and its narrow streets, packed with romantic bistros and little shops… Castle Hill tells the story of the city’s past, while the botanical garden offers an escape from the sun during the hottest part of the day…

The squares are a true hallmark of Nice, each one different and beautiful in its own way… The main one is Place Masséna, the heart of Nice, a vast space adorned with two fountains and the Masséna Palace. Place Garibaldi is proudly graced by a monument to the great Italian general Giuseppe Garibaldi. It may seem strange to find a monument to an Italian hero in one of France’s most popular cities, but there is a simple explanation… A look at the history of Nice reveals that the city passed from Italian to French hands only in 1860, which is why the center of Nice features a monument to a historical figure you will find in virtually every Italian town. Place Rossetti lies in the heart of the Old Town and is arguably the most popular square. Its atmosphere is completed by the Cathedral of Saint Reparata, along with plenty of small restaurants and a few pastry shops. Cours Saleya is famous for its flower market, one of the must-see attractions of Nice.

Besides the Cathedral of Saint Reparata, Nice has several other important religious buildings. Among the most popular is Notre-Dame de Nice, the largest church in the city, built in the Gothic style and recognizable by its two 65-meter towers. Thanks to its excellent acoustics, the basilica often hosts concerts. The most popular and most visited is the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, the most beautiful Russian church outside Russia, richly decorated inside and out. It was built by Tsar Nicholas at the very beginning of the 20th century and houses a rich collection of icons.

Nice also has plenty of museums covering all kinds of subjects. One of the richest is the Terra Amata Museum of Human Paleontology. The newest and most modern is the Museum of Asian Arts, built in Japanese style and tucked away in the lovely Phoenix Park on the shore of a lake… The Musée National Message Biblique Marc Chagall is especially interesting. It holds 17 works that convey Chagall’s biblical message, created by the artist during the 1960s. Chagall was born in what is now Belarus and spent the last twenty years of his life in Nice. Another famous painter left his mark on Nice as well: Henri Matisse. A rich collection of his paintings is housed in a beautiful villa with a red facade.

In the summer months you can enjoy the city beach, which stretches along the famous 6-kilometer Promenade des Anglais, lined across the road with some of the most exclusive hotels from world-renowned chains. One hotel has even become the symbol of this part of Nice: the Hotel Negresco, with a fascinating story about its first owner, a poor man who, by a twist of fate, ended up owning this remarkable hotel.

If you happen to be in Nice in February, you will be enchanted by the carnival, which has been held here since the 13th century…

Nice is captivating on its own, but if you decide to explore the surroundings, you will be amazed by the elegance of Monaco, the glitz of Monte Carlo, the exclusivity of Cannes, and the beauty of Saint-Tropez and Antibes…
