THE JEWEL OF LIGURIA

PODGORICA – GENOA FLIGHTS

If you’d love to experience a world-famous city colored by the scents and hues of the Mediterranean and rich in cultural and historical heritage, head to Genoa, the beauty of Liguria and one of Italy’s wealthiest cities. Book a Podgorica – Genoa flight and you can be in Genoa in just a few hours.

TRAVELING TO GENOA

Italy’s largest port, once a mighty maritime power and a city-state that even the Doge of Venice was wary of, once sailed under the flag of St. George. Today it is a powerful industrial center, but also a fascinating tourist city: peaceful, sun-drenched, cradled in wealth and prosperity, and still under the protection of the same saint.

The city has a very colorful atmosphere, full of narrow, winding streets, slender buildings in different colors, palaces, churches and hanging gardens. The old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is tightly packed because of Liguria’s hilly terrain and opens onto the sea, which embraces it in all its breadth and beauty…

Be sure to plan your walk through the city via Piazza De Ferrari, home to the imposing Doge’s Palace, once the seat of the Doges of Genoa and now a museum and exhibition venue… When you come across a Gothic church with a black-and-white marble façade, lion statues and twisted columns, that’s the 12th-century Cathedral of San Lorenzo. If you leave the old town through Porta Soprana, look for the house of Christopher Columbus, the famous Genoese explorer who set sail on behalf of the Spanish Crown in search of a new route to India and ended up in the Caribbean…

You’ll also reach the Old Port, where you can visit one of the richest aquariums in Europe. The ticket isn’t exactly „pocket change“, but it’s well worth it! If for no other reason, then to see live penguins!

On the main pedestrian street, Via Garibaldi, stop at an inviting spot to rest and be sure to try pasta with the famous „pesto Genovese“ sauce, then treat yourself to the pride of local pastry chefs: pandolce.

The city is also full of museums, such as the Museum of World Cultures and the Treasury Museum (Museo del Tesoro), whose most famous piece is the silver dish on which the head of St. John the Baptist was displayed, along with a fragment of the cross on which Jesus was crucified.

Believe it or not, some guidebooks even recommend visiting the cemetery, as it is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. If a cemetery can be beautiful! Personally, I’d rather recommend their „flea market“, one of the largest in Europe, because the atmosphere there is much livelier…

AROUND GENOA

The Ligurian Riviera is dotted with resorts, and one of the best known and certainly most beautiful is Sanremo, home of the famous Italian song festival. Of course, there are excellent connections to this little town, so you can choose between the bus and the train…

If you’ve never been to Cinque Terre, five villages on the Tyrrhenian coast 130 km from Genoa, use your trip to Genoa as a chance to visit these five incredible, beautiful villages… The easiest way to get there is by train; for more information on getting to Cinque Terre, visit http://www.cinqueterre.eu.com/en/cinqueterre-getting-there
