TRAVELING TO ZAGREB

Although there were human settlements in the Zagreb area even earlier, the first written records of the city are linked to the founding of the diocese on Kaptol in 1094. Another key event in the city’s history came in 1242, when King Béla IV issued the Golden Bull, granting the town of Gradec significant privileges and declaring it a free royal city. In the mid-19th century, the settlements of Gradec and Kaptol, together with the surrounding villages, were united into a single whole: today’s Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, on the banks of the Sava River.

Spacious pedestrian zones with plenty of cafés and inviting outdoor terraces scattered throughout the city add to the feeling that you are in a welcoming place. Walking is one of the best ways to explore all of Zagreb’s picturesque historic sights, hidden streets and passageways.

Central Zagreb is divided into two parts: the Upper Town and the Lower Town. With its historic buildings, churches and religious monuments, the Upper Town has great historical value and is a true paradise for tourists. The Lower Town, on the other hand, is mostly home to shops, cafés, museums and parks. Some attractions farther from the center are easily reached by bus or tram.

A must-see is the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This typically Gothic cathedral is known as the Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary. Its twin spires, visible from many parts of the city, make it Zagreb’s most recognizable landmark. The first cathedral was destroyed during the Tatar invasion in the 13th century, and the current one was built in the second half of the 13th century. But what we see today is not the original structure, as numerous renovations have changed the building’s appearance. The main reason for renovation was the massive damage caused by the 1880 earthquake, which completely destroyed the dome and bell tower. Still, the restoration preserved the medieval design. When you visit the cathedral, you’ll see a variety of objects related to religious art and vestments. Lotrščak Tower is a fortification also built in the 13th century to protect the Gradec town wall. Long ago, the tower had a bell that rang to announce the hour when all the gates were to be closed. Once the gates were shut, anyone left outside had to wait until the next day. You can enjoy a stunning view of the city when you climb the tower. Ban Jelačić Square is the city’s main square. It lies just south of Dolac Market. The Stone Gate is the only surviving one of the five Upper Town gates built to protect Gradec. These gates were the entrances through the walls built as fortifications around Gradec. According to legend, the houses and surroundings were destroyed in 1731, but the painting of Jesus and Mary that decorated the Stone Gate miraculously survived undamaged. The painting was then protected by building a chapel and placed behind a metal grille. Even today, people come here to pray.

Nature lovers will be delighted to learn that Zagreb has about 30 attractive parks covering an area of 400,000 square meters. Among the most impressive is the so-called Lenuci Horseshoe, or Green Horseshoe – a U-shaped complex of parks and green spaces surrounding the city center. Maksimir Park also deserves a mention, as it is home to the zoo. Lake Jarun is the main spot for all kinds of outdoor activities, such as rowing, sailing, windsurfing, swimming, running, rollerblading and skateboarding. Around the lake there are many restaurants and nightclubs open until the early morning hours. The lake is easy to reach by tram. Hiking on Sljeme, the highest peak of Medvednica, is a great way to enjoy nature. Another top attraction worth visiting is the Veternica cave system.

Zagreb also has a rich cultural life, reflected in numerous theater performances, operas and operettas, concerts of contemporary, classical and jazz music, and many festivals. Events in recent years have attracted many tourists, as some of the world’s most famous artists have performed here (U2, Jon Bon Jovi, Shakira, Beyoncé, Plácido Domingo, etc.).

Today Zagreb has numerous discos, clubs, pubs, beer halls and plenty of cafés and restaurants that, among other things, offer great entertainment. The city center is the liveliest area, but the atmosphere is also great at the “Zagreb seaside” – Lake Jarun – where the nightlife rivals the most famous party destinations, thanks to its many clubs and bars.
