Tivat – Copenhagen

Copenhagen, capital of one of the world’s oldest monarchies, is a city of Andersen’s fairy tales, colourful canal-side houses, cyclists and Scandinavian design. If Viking stories, royal palaces, fresh Danish pastries and a good beer appeal to you, a Tivat – Copenhagen flight is the perfect start to your trip.

A royal city by the sea

Copenhagen’s story begins in the 12th century, when Bishop Absalon built a fortress on the islet of Slotsholmen to protect the coast from pirates. Christiansborg Palace, home of the Danish Parliament, stands on that very spot today. The city’s name – København – means “merchants’ harbour”, which says a lot about how the town grew and prospered. The biggest mark on the city was left by King Christian IV, who reigned from the late 16th to the mid-17th century and gave Copenhagen some of its finest buildings, from Rosenborg Castle to the Round Tower.

What to see in Copenhagen

Palaces and the royal family

Rosenborg Castle, built in Dutch Renaissance style in the middle of the King’s Garden (Kongens Have), is filled with painted ceilings, tapestries and silver lions, while its basement holds the Danish Crown Jewels. Amalienborg has been home to the royal family since the late 18th century – four almost identical palaces frame an octagonal square, and the changing of the guard takes place every day at noon. Part of one palace is open to visitors as a museum.

Museums for every taste

The National Museum takes you through Danish history from the Stone Age and Bronze Age finds to Viking weapons and artefacts of the seafarers who reached North America centuries before Columbus. The National Gallery of Denmark (SMK) holds works by European masters as well as modern artists such as Picasso and Munch, while the Glyptotek, founded thanks to the Jacobsen brewing family, impresses with ancient sculpture, Etruscan art, paintings by Gauguin and a rich collection of works by Rodin.

Neighbourhoods and canals

The city’s most photographed scene is Nyhavn – a canal lined with wooden sailing ships and brightly painted houses, once a rough sailors’ quarter and now a row of cafés and restaurants. In the Latin Quarter, around the university, Copenhagen Cathedral (Vor Frue Kirke) houses Thorvaldsen’s famous statues of Christ and the Twelve Apostles. Across the bridge in Christianshavn, the Church of Our Saviour (Vor Frelsers Kirke) has a spiral spire with views over the whole city and across to Sweden. Right next door is Christiania, a community founded in 1971 in former army barracks and known for its alternative lifestyle, art and murals. Note that buying and selling cannabis is illegal there too, and the notorious Pusher Street was closed in 2024 at the residents’ own initiative.

Tivoli and the Little Mermaid

Tivoli Gardens, opened in 1843, is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world and still one of the most charming – with gardens, restaurants, concerts and rides for all ages. A walk along the waterfront leads to the Little Mermaid, a modest bronze statue from 1913 inspired by Andersen’s tale. It is not monumental, but it has become a symbol of the city and of a story of love and devotion.

A day trip to Hamlet’s castle

With a spare day, take the train for less than an hour to Helsingør and UNESCO-listed Kronborg Castle, which Shakespeare used as the setting for “Hamlet”.
