TRAVELING TO LJUBLJANA
The Ljubljanica River flows through fairy-tale Ljubljana, tamed by several bridges that connect the two sides of the city. Among the most popular are the Triple Bridge, the Dragon Bridge and the Butchers’ Bridge, better known as Ljubljana’s Love Bridge. Stroll hand in hand along the river while admiring the buildings along the embankment, wander through the colorful market or enjoy a glass of fine Traminer at one of the cafés.
The city’s architecture is a blend of styles that changed over the centuries as a result of several devastating earthquakes. Some of the oldest structures survive from Roman times. After an earthquake destroyed the city in the 16th century, much of it was rebuilt in the Baroque style. After another earthquake at the end of the 19th century, the city was rebuilt once again, this time in the Vienna Secession style, which now blends beautifully with the surviving Baroque buildings. Walk through Ljubljana with your loved one and admire the city’s colorful facades.
Ljubljana’s most important fortress, Ljubljana Castle, sits on a wooded hill right in the center of town. After a romantic dinner at the “Gostilna na Gradu” restaurant, enjoy the sunset as it disappears behind the castle towers. Climb the spiral staircase to the top for an outstanding panoramic view of the city and its surroundings, including the Julian Alps in the distance.
Ljubljana has several markets, including the popular Central Market, which spans the entire width of the Ljubljanica embankment from the Triple Bridge to the Dragon Bridge. Vendors here sell textiles, flowers, fruit and vegetables, and much more. Once you’ve picked up some fresh fruit and other treats, head to a park or sit along the riverbank and enjoy a picnic lunch!
Another popular market in Ljubljana is Open Kitchen, held on Fridays from mid-March to October. It usually features around thirty different food vendors, including nearby restaurants, local farms and independent cooks, who proudly share their offerings with locals and tourists alike. It’s a great place for a glass of wine and a taste of local delicacies.
Ljubljana isn’t just the city of love; it’s also the City of Dragons. Go on your own little hunt for these “monsters” and see who can spot the most dragons around town. You’ll find them in the places you least expect…
